The Cottage in the Glade
You gaze out from the open window. All around stand tall trees, their leafy boughs raised toward the blue summer sky. But the branches are empty; no bird sings or squirrel chatters among the leaves. You listen for any sign of life, but all you can hear is the wind in the eaves, the spring that mutters in the garden pool, the restless creaking of the the old house, and the ticking of the clock, as it steadily counts the seconds, on, and on, and on.
