Summer Evening in the Garden
Looking serenely out over the garden that took much of last year to cultivate, a quiet calm settles out as a hint of twilight begins to pull just slightly at the sky. Shadows begin to elongate and the cacophony of birds and insects have just started to settle for the night, while the colors of the sky have subtly gotten deeper and more vibrant. It's humid and rather hot still, but a cool breeze seeps from the shaded refuge of the forest surrounding the house, slowly creeping through the garden. Drifting on the breeze, the air is filled with the smells of grass, honeysuckles, numerous flowers, and the tea and pastries cooling on the table. The massive, ancient trees creak and rustle in the sudden wind as the only sense of movement in the quieting forest. The dirt trail to the pond is still visible but painted in pinks and oranges as the fading sun strikes deep gold into each wave. The frogs have started their songs at this change, but softly like an orchestra warming up for a performance. Cicadas have joined the tune, yet a lone woodpecker will not yet be deterred from the day's activities. There is nothing left to do for the day but watch it fade into quiet night as fireflies start to dance, and enjoy a pot of tea and some snacks.
